As we fast approach the end of what has to be the speediest passing of any year to date. (it’s official), are you looking back at your goal list you made in January – and lamenting that fact that you haven’t quite achieved what you wanted? A trail of non-starter or even unfinished projects in your wake?
I’ve certainly had projects this past year that I’ve left fall by the wayside. Some of them I’d simply lost interest in; while others didn’t quite gather the momentum I’d hoped for. The goals that have come to fruition however, are the ones I’ve been most passionate about. The projects I was prepared to put in the hours for, make a commitment to and follow through with investment of my time, my courage (in some cases) and my heart. Oh, and my cash.
So as you perhaps embark on another list of ideas and goals you want to achieve next year, my advice is to follow your passion. Follow your heart and connect with what you really love; rather than what you think you should be doing. In so many instances of great innovators – look at Steve Jobs – he followed his passion from Apple to Pixar and beyond. The money came… But it wasn’t his first priority. In fact this moving quote really helps explain in some part the driving force behind this incredible man:
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”
– Stanford commencement speech 2005
I’d love to hear from readers who have also followed their passion. And in doing so created or are creating the kind of lifestyle that allows free expression of your talents and creativity. And gives you the feeling that you are fulfilling your life purpose(s).
Happy creating!
