Giving Up. Is the world really divided into the quitters and the stayers? And what actually makes some people run the course, while others throw in the towel at the first hurdle?
Being able to see beyond life’s pesky U-bends is a great thing, as Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb would no doubt agree. Apparently it took him over two years of failed attempts before he helped to illuminate the planet. Now that’s what I call staying power! This guy had perseverance in spades. And there are countless other examples of men and women who kept the faith.
If only we could see round the U-bend we’d realise that just as we are about to give up, we are often mere nano-seconds away from success; a mere smidge away from realising our dreams and putting our hopes and dreams into exciting 3D action.
So if we weren’t endowed with the resiliant perseverance gene, how can we stay on course when all we feel like doing is chucking it all away? Here are five tips to help you stay on track – all of which I have used myself as I tend to be an impatient soul!
1. Is your project or plan something you love and are passionate about? Or is it a chore? Our attitude can sometimes help shift things. How can you make what you are doing more fun, rather than scary/overwhelming/annoying?
2. Don’t force the issue. Timing is absolutely crucial in matters of creation. If you’re finding things aren’t budging, then maybe it’s really not the right time. Let go for a bit.
3. To avoid overwhelm, do tasks in small chunks. Divide your day into time slots.
4. Ask friends for help. Do you know anyone else who’s already achieved what you are trying to do? If so, don’t be a stranger – ask them to share their wisdom and hard-won knowledge.
5. Pray. I’m no fan of organised religion, but I do believe in a consciousness behind the scenes in this beautiful world of ours. An unstoppable force that is all-giving and all-benevolent. Asking for help to an unseen force may be anathema for some of you, but believe me, it works. Just be careful what you wish for?!
